Spivey History
Who is William H. Spivey, MD, FACEP?
On March 24, 1993, the Pennsylvania ACEP Board of Directors named the PaACEP Scientific Assembly Poster/Paper competition in memory of William H. Spivey, MD, FACEP, to recognize his outstanding contributions as a teacher, researcher, and clinician. He died on February 20, 1993.
Dr. Spivey was internationally known for his research in emergency medicine. He was also a gifted educator who enjoyed teaching residents and medical students and never refused to share his research expertise. He volunteered many hours of his time to coordinate the annual competition.
In his 39 short years, Dr. Spivey received numerous awards for his research work, including the ACEP Research Scholar Award in 1985, the Best Speaker Award at the 1989 Annual Meeting of the American College of Clinical Pharmacologists, the Best Oral Presentation Award at the PaACEP Scientific Assembly in 1990, and the ACEP National Leadership Award in Research in 1992. Dr. Spivey also published more than 40 medical papers and was a contributing author to more than a dozen book chapters on emergency medicine.
At the time of his death, Dr. Spivey was fellowship director at the Medical College of Pennsylvania and chief of the emergency department’s division of research. He also served as assistant director of clinical research with Sterling-Winthrop Pharmaceuticals in Collegeville, Montgomery County.
